Sigh...sewing?

After reading Carolyn's post today, I left this comment.....

I am surprised - and slightly saddened - to realise that I have got to the stage where the whole process is kind of daunting now! Shocked actually.....as at one time I would have made at least 60-80% of my wardrobe, and have made just about everything from baby to bridal.

After a break of about 4 or 5 years I have now got to the stage where I don't know where to start to get back to what I loved! Sometimes I go into my sewing room....look at my patterns, choose one and match it with fabric...then think about everything I have to do before it becomes a garment, and instead of being excited....I am left feeling overwhelmed :-(

Got to get back to some kind of sewing pleasure again!

It is how I feel right now and I really do want to change that. I used to live, breathe and sleep sewing - particularly making my own clothes. I know things change and we all go through phases, but I would really love to feel excited about sewing my own clothes again.

So, with summer just around the corner I think I will try some skirts first......I have this lovely new Japanese linen that is ideal for this time of year, and a simple pattern that I know works.....so, baby steps :-)

I've just noticed that you are qualified kilt maker. That's quite something to have on your resume!

Have you been reading my mind? I read that post on Carolyn's blog as well and had pretty much the same thought as you. When I was in my teens and 20's I made nearly everything I wore. When my kids were little I made nearly everything they wore too. These days I buy new patters, borrow Burda magazines, stash fabric ... and that's about it. Spring cleaning has started but once that's done I am determined to make something for someone and get over my 'fears' as well. Good luck with the skirt(s) :)

Gail, I also miss my kiltmaking and am seriously thinking about trying to get back to it in some way.
Deb, glad I am not the only one :-) Isn't it crazy to feel guilty for not doing something that is supposed to be enjoyable and a hobby?! Good luck to you too, whatever you decide to make :-)

What a great fabric for a skirt, and I do hope you start to enjoy sewing again as you have/do create some wonderful garments.

Thank you Sharon.....I think I just need to remind myself why I love it so much :-)

The hardest part is making the first cut. I say close your eyes and go for it! You've chosen a lovely piece of fabric, and a pattern you know will work...close the world off and go for it!

Thanks Carolyn......I will go for it! I will close off the world but might need to keep my eyes open LOL....especially for that first cut :-)

Hiya, I just found you by having a wee browse through The Dreamstress' followers. I too am a quilter and dressmaker, and in the past few years I've made a lot more quilts than frocks. But last week I finished a gorgeous frock coat for myself and got a hug rush of remembering why I love to sew things that aren't quilts! So I will if you will :) Where in NZ are you? Mx

There is so much written about writer's block or singers suddenly and inexplicably loosing their voice - what about us makers? I 'suffer' from too many ideas.... often have too many bags started and then don't have the motivation to finish any of them, because another design idea and material is begging for attention..
Loved the linen for your skirt, did you have any luck with it? Hope so ! x
